I don't like it when people rattle off a long list of all possible marketing channels, because it doesn't fit a framework and is easy to forget. Think of marketing channels like tools in a mechanic's toolkit: what matters isn't the length of the list, it's knowing which tool fits which job. So before the checklist, two distinctions that organize everything.

1. Paid vs. organic marketing

Paid ads are campaigns on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Google, TikTok, Snapchat, YouTube and X — you exchange money for reach. Organic traffic comes from content creation that earns free website visitors.

For organic, you can create editorial content yourself or leverage user-generated content (UGC). Content can target virality (like TikTok) or search ranking (like blog posts and SEO), and comes in video, audio and written formats. Ideas that work: interesting facts, humor, provocative angles, gamification, answering real customer questions, and riffing on relevant current events.

2. Warm vs. cold outreach

Cold targets strangers who've never heard of your brand. Warm targets existing customers or people who've already interacted with your store. This spectrum runs across every channel — retargeting past purchasers vs. prospecting new audiences, for example.

Warm marketing typically converts more easily and cheaply; cold marketing offers greater scale. Effective strategies employ both deliberately, rather than drifting into one by accident.

Diversify or be hostage

If 80% of your revenue derives from Instagram, your business has a single point of failure — one algorithm change, ad account ban or CPM spike away from crisis. A diversified marketing mix is not a nice-to-have; it's risk management.

The complete marketing channels checklist

  • PR and press coverage (paid and earned)
  • Email marketing (cold volume and warm Klaviyo flows)
